Nelson Lagoon
Nelson Lagoon is located on the northern coast of the Alaska Peninsula where it humbly sits on a narrow sand spit that separates the lagoon from the Bering Sea. Nelson Lagoon is the only Aleut settlement on the Bering Sea shore. In the 1800s, Nelson Lagoon was an Unangan summer campsite; the community was established as a permanent settlement in 1960. Mother Nature works diligently to remodel the spit where Nelson Lagoon resides, making it longer and narrower as the beach area slowly washes out in one sector and is rebuilt in another.
